  1  1    Section 1.  Section 321.34, subsection 19, Code Supplement
  1  2 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    19.  UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES RETIRED SPECIAL PLATES.  An
  1  4 owner referred to in subsection 12 who is a retired member of
  1  5 the United States armed forces, may, upon written application
  1  6 to the department and upon presentation of satisfactory proof
  1  7 of membership, order special registration plates with a United
  1  8 States armed forces retired processed emblem.  The emblem
  1  9 shall be designed by the department in consultation with
  1 10 service organizations.  The application is subject to approval
  1 11 by the department.  For purposes of this subsection, a person
  1 12 is considered to be retired if the person served twenty years
  1 13 or longer in is recognized by the United States armed forces
  1 14 or is a person who served a minimum of ten years and received
  1 15 an honorable discharge from service due to a medical
  1 16 disqualification as retired from the United States armed
  1 17 forces.  
  1 18                           EXPLANATION
  1 19    This bill provides that persons who are recognized by the
  1 20 United States armed forces as retired from the United States
  1 21 armed forces are considered to be "retired" for purposes of
  1 22 obtaining a United States armed forces retired motor vehicle
  1 23 license plate.  Currently, only persons who have served 20
  1 24 years or longer or persons who have served 10 years or longer
  1 25 and received an honorable discharge due to a medical
  1 26 disqualification are eligible to receive the special plate.
