1 1 Section 1. STUDY OF THE USE OF CORN-BASED DE-ICERS. The
1 2 state department of transportation shall study, make
1 3 recommendations regarding, and conduct testing on the use of
1 4 corn-based de-icers on the highways of this state. The study
1 5 shall be conducted in one or more transportation regions of
1 6 the state, as determined by the department. The department
1 7 shall study the feasibility of using corn-based de-icers and
1 8 the benefits and detriments of such use to highways, road
1 9 construction and maintenance equipment, vehicles, and the
1 10 environment. The department shall also study the costs
1 11 involved with the use of corn-based de-icers and the equipment
1 12 needed for such use. On or before September 1, 2003, the
1 13 department shall submit a report to the general assembly
1 14 concerning the results of the study and the findings and
1 15 recommendations of the department.
1 16 EXPLANATION
1 17 This bill directs the state department of transportation to
1 18 conduct a study, make recommendations regarding, and conduct
1 19 testing on the use of corn-based de-icers on highways in the
1 20 state. The study is to be conducted in one or more
1 21 transportation regions of the state, as determined by the
1 22 department, and is to include the benefits and detriments of
1 23 the use of the de-icers to highways, road construction and
1 24 maintenance equipment, vehicles, and the environment. The
1 25 department shall also study the costs involved and the
1 26 equipment needed for the use of de-icers. The department is
1 27 to report to the general assembly the results of the study by
1 28 September 1, 2003.
