PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 400.17, unnumbered paragraph 3, Code 1 2 1999, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 Employees shall not be required to be a resident of the 1 4 city in which they are employed, but they shall become a 1 5 resident of the state at the time such appointment or 1 6 employment begins and shall remain a resident of the state 1 7 during employment. However, a city may allow police officers, 1 8 fire fighters, and other critical city employees to reside in 1 9 an adjacent state within the standard metropolitan statistical 1 10 area of which the city is a part. Cities may also set 1 11 reasonable maximum distances outside of the corporate limits 1 12 of the city that police officers, fire fighters, and other 1 13 critical municipal employees may live. 1 14 EXPLANATION 1 15 This bill authorizes a city to allow its police officers, 1 16 fire fighters, and other critical city employees to reside in 1 17 an adjacent state within the standard metropolitan statistical 1 18 area of which the city is a part. 1 19 LSB 2457YH 78 1 20 tj/jw/5
