1 1 Section 1. TRADE REPRESENTATIVES. In an effort to develop
1 2 trade between Iowa and the North American free trade agreement
1 3 countries of Canada and Mexico, the department of economic
1 4 development shall contact both governments to explore the
1 5 possibility of both countries assigning a trade representative
1 6 to be located in Iowa. The department shall use moneys
1 7 appropriated in section 2 of this Act to offset costs incurred
1 8 by the department to assist Canada and Mexico in locating
1 9 trade representatives in Iowa.
1 10 Sec. 2. APPROPRIATION. There is appropriated from the
1 11 general fund of the state to the department of economic
1 12 development for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1999, and
1 13 ending June 30, 2000, the following amount, or so much thereof
1 14 as is necessary, to be used for the purpose designated:
1 15 For offsetting costs incurred by the department to assist
1 16 Canada and Mexico in locating trade representatives in Iowa:
1 17 .................................................. $ 100,000
1 18 Notwithstanding section 8.33, moneys appropriated in this
1 19 section that remain unencumbered or unobligated at the close
1 20 of the fiscal year shall not revert but shall remain available
1 21 for expenditure for the purpose designated until the close of
1 22 the succeeding fiscal year.
1 23 EXPLANATION
1 24 This bill requires the department of economic development
1 25 to contact the governments of Canada and Mexico to explore the
1 26 possibility of both countries assigning a trade representative
1 27 to be located in Iowa. The bill appropriates $100,000 from
1 28 the general fund of the state to the department for purposes
1 29 of offsetting costs incurred by the department in assisting
1 30 Canada and Mexico in locating trade representatives in Iowa.
