1 1 Section 1. Section 48A.34, Code 1999, is amended to read
1 2 as follows:
1 3 48A.34 CONFIDENTIALITY OF CERTAIN RECORDS.
1 4 Voter registration records are available for public
1 5 inspection at reasonable times at the office of the county
1 6 commissioner. However, the residence address of a registrant
1 7 shall remain confidential if that registrant has also supplied
1 8 a post office box mailing address pursuant to section 48A.11,
1 9 subsection 1. The commissioner and any voter registration
1 10 agency which has custody of voter registration records shall
1 11 take the necessary steps to ensure that the name of the agency
1 12 at which the voter registration form was submitted remains
1 13 confidential.
1 14 Sec. 2. Section 48A.38, subsection 1, paragraph c, Code
1 15 1999, is amended to read as follows:
1 16 c. Each list shall be in the order and form specified by
1 17 the list purchaser, and shall contain the registration data
1 18 specified by the list purchaser, provided compliance with the
1 19 request is within the capability of the record maintenance
1 20 system used by the registrar. However, if addresses are
1 21 requested, the registrar shall omit the residence address of a
1 22 registrant if the registrant has provided a post office box
1 23 mailing address in addition to a residence address.
1 24 EXPLANATION
1 25 This bill provides that the residence address supplied by a
1 26 person registered to vote is confidential information if the
1 27 person, when registering, also supplied a post office box
1 28 mailing address. The bill also requires the state registrar
1 29 and county registrars to omit the residence address of a
1 30 registered voter who has also supplied a post office box
1 31 mailing address from lists of registered voters requested by a
1 32 list purchaser.
