1 1 Section 1. Section 256.44, subsection 1, Code 1999, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 1. A teacher, as defined in section 272.1, who registers
1 4 for a national board for professional teaching standards
1 5 certificate and is employed by a school district in Iowa or
1 6 the Price laboratory school at the university of northern
1 7 Iowa, shall be eligible for a registration award as provided
1 8 in subsection 2, and upon achievement of a national board for
1 9 professional teaching standards certificate, is eligible for
1 10 an annual award of ten thousand dollars for each year the
1 11 certificate is valid as provided in this section.
1 12 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPLICABILITY. This Act, being
1 13 deemed of immediate importance, takes effect upon enactment.
1 14 Notwithstanding Code section 256.44, subsection 4, paragraph
1 15 "b", for purposes of payment of awards to teachers who receive
1 16 departmental approval of their applications pursuant to
1 17 enactment of this Act, the payments may be made after January
1 18 15, 1999.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This bill extends national board certification award
1 21 eligibility to teachers employed by the Price laboratory
1 22 school at the university of northern Iowa. Under present law,
1 23 only teachers employed by a school district can be eligible to
1 24 receive up to $2,000 for a registration award, and upon
1 25 receiving certification by the national board for professional
1 26 teaching standards, an annual award of $10,000 for up to five
1 27 years.
1 28 The bill takes effect upon enactment.
