  1  4 EXPANDING THE CRIMINAL CODE DEFINITION OF SERIOUS INJURY TO
  1  5    INCLUDE CERTAIN INJURIES TO CHILDREN.

  1  7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
  1  8 
  1  9    Section 1.  Section 702.18, Code 1999, is amended to read
  1 10 as follows:
  1 11    702.18  SERIOUS INJURY.
  1 12    1.  "Serious injury" means disabling any of the following:
  1 13    a.  Disabling mental illness, or bodily.
  1 14    b.  Bodily injury which creates does any of the following:
  1 15    (1)  Creates a substantial risk of death or which causes.
  1 16    (2)  Causes serious permanent disfigurement, or.
  1 17    (3)  Causes protracted loss or impairment of the function of
  1 18 any bodily member or organ, and.
  1 19    c.  Any injury to a child that requires surgical repair and
  1 20 necessitates the administration of general anesthesia.
  1 21    2.  "Serious injury" includes but is not limited to skull
  1 22 fractures, rib fractures, and metaphyseal fractures of the
  1 23 long bones of children under the age of four years.
