  1  1    Section 1.  Section 481A.57, Code 1999, is amended to read
  1  2 as follows:
  1  3    481A.57  POSSESSION AND STORAGE.
  1  4    A person having lawful possession of game or fur-bearing
  1  5 animals or their pelts, except deer venison, may hold them for
  1  6 not to exceed thirty days after the close of the open season
  1  7 for such game or furbearers.  A person having lawful
  1  8 possession of deer venison which is taken with a valid deer
  1  9 hunting license, may hold the deer venison from the date of
  1 10 taking until the following September 1.  From September 1
  1 11 until the first day of the next deer open season for which the
  1 12 person holds a valid deer hunting license, the person shall
  1 13 not possess more than twenty-five pounds of deer venison.  A
  1 14 person having lawful possession of deer venison by means other
  1 15 than personal taking of a deer shall not possess more than
  1 16 twenty-five pounds of deer venison at any time.  A permit to
  1 17 hold for a longer period may be granted by the department.  
  1 18                           EXPLANATION
  1 19    This bill extends the 30-day limit during which a person
  1 20 having lawful possession of deer venison may hold the deer
  1 21 venison without a special permit.  This bill authorizes the
  1 22 person having lawful possession of deer venison to hold the
  1 23 deer venison from the date of taking until the following
  1 24 September 1.  From September 1 until the first day of the next
  1 25 deer open season for which the person holds a valid deer
  1 26 hunting license, the person shall not possess more than 25
  1 27 pounds of deer venison.
  1 28    The bill also provides that a person having lawful
  1 29 possession of deer venison by means other than personal taking
  1 30 of a deer shall not possess more than 25 pounds of deer
  1 31 venison at any time.
  1 32    A person having unlawful possession of deer venison is
  1 33 guilty of a simple misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine
  1 34 of not less than $10 nor more than $100 pursuant to Code
  1 35 section 481A.32.
