  1  1    Amend House File 2359 as follows:
  1  2    #1.  Page 1, by striking lines 1 through 20, and
  1  3 inserting the following:
  1  4    "Section 1.  Section 341A.18, unnumbered paragraph
  1  5 8, Code 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1  6    An officer or employee subject to civil service and
  1  7 a chief deputy sheriff or second deputy sheriff, who
  1  8 becomes a candidate for a partisan elective office for
  1  9 remuneration, unless running unopposed upon request,
  1 10 shall automatically be given a leave of absence
  1 11 without pay, commencing thirty days before the date of
  1 12 the primary election and continuing until the person
  1 13 is eliminated as a candidate or wins the primary, and
  1 14 commencing thirty days before the date of the general
  1 15 election and continuing until the person is eliminated
  1 16 as a candidate or wins the general election, and
  1 17 during the leave period shall not perform any duties
  1 18 connected with the office or position so held.  The
  1 19 officer or employee subject to civil service, or chief
  1 20 deputy sheriff or second deputy sheriff, may, however,
  1 21 use accumulated paid vacation time for part or all of
  1 22 the any leave of absence required under this section.
  1 23 The county shall continue to provide health benefit
  1 24 coverages, and may continue to provide other fringe
  1 25 benefits, to any officer or employee subject to civil
  1 26 service, or to any chief deputy sheriff or second
  1 27 deputy sheriff during any leave of absence required
  1 28 under this section."
