  1  1    Section 1.  Section 148A.6, subsection 2, Code 1997, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    2.  A licensed physical therapist assistant is required to
  1  4 function under the direction and supervision of a licensed
  1  5 physical therapist shall be authorized to perform physical
  1  6 therapy procedures delegated and supervised by the a licensed
  1  7 physical therapist in a manner consistent with the rules
  1  8 adopted by the board of physical and occupational therapy
  1  9 examiners.  The continuous direction and supervision of a
  1 10 licensed physical therapist assistant by a licensed physical
  1 11 therapist shall not be required, provided that the licensed
  1 12 physical therapist assistant is employed in association with,
  1 13 and receives regular direction and supervision by, a licensed
  1 14 physical therapist.  Selected and delegated tasks of physical
  1 15 therapist assistants may include, but are not limited to,
  1 16 therapeutic procedures and related tasks, routine operational
  1 17 functions, documentation of treatment progress, and the use of
  1 18 selected physical agents.  The ability of the licensed
  1 19 physical therapist assistant to perform the selected and
  1 20 delegated tasks shall be assessed on an ongoing basis by the
  1 21 supervising physical therapist.  The licensed physical
  1 22 therapist assistant shall not interpret referrals, perform
  1 23 initial evaluation or reevaluations, initiate physical therapy
  1 24 treatment programs, change specified treatment programs, or
  1 25 discharge a patient from physical therapy services.  
  1 26                           EXPLANATION
  1 27    This bill provides that a licensed physical therapist
  1 28 assistant shall be authorized to perform physical therapy
  1 29 procedures delegated by a licensed physical therapist, under
  1 30 the regular, as opposed to continuous, direction and
  1 31 supervision of the licensed physical therapist.
