1 1 Section 1. The following amendment to the Constitution of
1 2 the State of Iowa is proposed.
1 3 Section 1 of Article I of the Constitution of the State of
1 4 Iowa is amended to read as follows:
1 5 RIGHTS OF PERSONS. Section 1. All men and women are, by
1 6 nature, free and equal, and have certain inalienable rights -
1 7 among which are those of enjoying and defending life and
1 8 liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and
1 9 pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness.
1 10 Sec. 2. The foregoing proposed amendment, having been
1 11 adopted and agreed to by the Seventy-sixth General Assembly,
1 12 1995 Session, thereafter duly published, and now adopted and
1 13 agreed to by the Seventy-seventh General Assembly in this
1 14 Joint Resolution, shall be submitted to the people of the
1 15 State of Iowa at the general election in November of the year
1 16 nineteen hundred ninety-eight in the manner required by the
1 17 Constitution of the State of Iowa and the laws of the State of
1 18 Iowa.
1 19 EXPLANATION
1 20 This Joint Resolution proposes an amendment to the
1 21 Constitution of the State of Iowa, for adoption by the second
1 22 consecutive general assembly, regarding the equality of rights
1 23 of men and women under the law. The resolution, if adopted,
1 24 would be submitted to the electorate for ratification.
