1 3 A Resolution demanding that Governor Arne Carlson make
1 4 a public apology for defamatory comments about the
1 5 city of Des Moines.
1 6 WHEREAS, with a population of more than 600,000 in
1 7 the nine-county Central Iowa area, Greater Des Moines
1 8 provides many advantages of both large-city and small-
1 9 town living; and
1 10 WHEREAS, respected national publications such as
1 11 U.S. News and World Report and The Economist call Des
1 12 Moines one of the "boom towns" in the United States
1 13 due to its steadily increasing work force, low jobless
1 14 rate, high per capita income, and world class schools;
1 15 and
1 16 WHEREAS, according to Reliastar Financial Corp., a
1 17 Minneapolis based holding company, Des Moines is the
1 18 number 5 city in the United States offering its
1 19 residents an opportunity for financial security; and
1 20 WHEREAS, more than $3.5 billion in new construction
1 21 and renovation has occurred in downtown Des Moines
1 22 over the past 10 years; and
1 23 WHEREAS, Des Moines is the home of a new baseball
1 24 stadium, recently listed as the sixth best minor
1 25 league stadium in the country by Baseball America
1 26 magazine, which was financed and constructed with
1 27 civic hometown pride; and
1 28 WHEREAS, the citizens of Iowa, including the
1 29 residents of the Greater Des Moines Area, place a high
1 30 value on respecting a neighbor and taking
2 1 responsibility for personal actions; and
2 2 WHEREAS, on Saturday, February 15, Minnesota
2 3 Governor Arne Carlson, as part of a speech defending a
2 4 proposal for the construction of a taxpayer-subsidized
2 5 baseball stadium, defamed the City of Des Moines by
2 6 making remarks coming out of left field disparaging
2 7 the health and vitality of the City of Des Moines; and
2 8 WHEREAS, many citizens and businesses of Minnesota
2 9 have expressed embarrassment that Governor Carlson
2 10 made a bad call during his speech, and has failed to
2 11 correct his perception; NOW THEREFORE,
2 12 BE IT RESOLVED, That Governor Arne Carlson
2 13 acknowledge that he committed an error and apologize
2 14 to the citizens of Iowa and specifically to the
2 15 residents of Greater Des Moines; and
2 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Iowans support Iowa-
2 17 based businesses, including the thriving business
2 18 community in Des Monies, and specifically boycott the
2 19 Mall of America in order to drive home to Governor
2 20 Carlson that he has just struck out; and
2 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
2 22 Senate send copies of this resolution to Governor Arne
2 23 Carlson and to the chairman of the board of the
2 24 Minneapolis Star Tribune.
