1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 135.29A STATE POISON CENTER.
1 2 The director shall designate a state poison center, as
1 3 directed by the general assembly, to provide poison
1 4 information, telephone management advice and consultation,
1 5 conduct hazard surveillance to achieve hazard elimination, and
1 6 provide professional and public education in poison
1 7 prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and to provide any other
1 8 services or functions necessary to be classified as a
1 9 certified poison center. The poison center shall not
1 10 subcontract with a poison center outside of the state to
1 11 provide the necessary services or functions. The director
1 12 shall provide the necessary documentation of the state poison
1 13 center designation to the poison center for certification by
1 14 the American association of poison control centers or other
1 15 certifying organization.
1 16 Sec. 2. DESIGNATION OF STATE POISON CENTER
1 17 APPROPRIATION. The general assembly designates as the poison
1 18 center for the state of Iowa the medical center which is
1 19 operating a poison center on or before July 1, 1998, in the
1 20 state. The poison center shall meet all requirements
1 21 necessary to be certified as a poison center by the American
1 22 association of poison control centers and shall not
1 23 subcontract with a poison center outside of the state to
1 24 provide the required services or functions. The director of
1 25 public health shall provide any documentation necessary to the
1 26 poison center for certification.
1 27 There is appropriated from the general fund of the state to
1 28 the Iowa department of public health for the fiscal year
1 29 beginning July 1, 1998, and ending June 30, 1999, the
1 30 following amount, or so much thereof as is necessary, for use
1 31 by the designated poison control center to provide a poison
1 32 control hotline, staffing, and other services and functions
1 33 necessary to meet the requirements of certification:

1 35 EXPLANATION
2 1 This bill provides for the designation of a statewide
2 2 poison control center by the director of public health as
2 3 directed by the general assembly. The bill provides that the
2 4 general assembly designates as the state poison center a
2 5 medical center which is operating a poison center on or before
2 6 July 1, 1998, in the state. The bill also provides an
2 7 appropriation to the Iowa department of public health for use
2 8 by the designated poison control center to provide a poison
2 9 control hotline, staffing, and other necessary services and
2 10 functions to meet the requirements of certification by the
2 11 American association of poison control centers.
