  1  1    Section 1.  Section 331.805, subsection 3, paragraph b,
  1  2 Code 1997, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    b.  (1)  If the next of kin, guardian, or other person
  1  4 authorized to act on behalf of a deceased person has requested
  1  5 that the body of the deceased person be cremated, a permit for
  1  6 cremation must be obtained from a medical examiner.  However,
  1  7 a permit is not required if the deceased person was a member
  1  8 of an established religion whose tenets are opposed to the
  1  9 inspection or examination of the body of a deceased person.
  1 10 Cremation permits by the medical examiner must be made on the
  1 11 most current forms prepared at the direction of and approved
  1 12 by the state medical examiner, with copies forwarded to the
  1 13 state medical examiner's office.  Costs for the cremation
  1 14 permit issued by a medical examiner shall not exceed thirty-
  1 15 five dollars.  The costs shall be borne by the family, next of
  1 16 kin, guardian of the decedent, or other person.
  1 17    (2)  A person requesting that the body of a deceased person
  1 18 be cremated pursuant to subparagraph (1) and who intends to
  1 19 bury the cremated remains shall register with the county
  1 20 recorder the location of the buried remains.  
  1 21                           EXPLANATION
  1 22    This bill provides that a person who intends to bury the
  1 23 cremated remains of a deceased individual must register with
  1 24 the county recorder the location of the buried remains.
