1 1 Section 1. Section 422.12, Code 1997, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 2A. A community college tuition and fees
1 4 tax credit equal to fifty percent of the amount of tuition and
1 5 fees paid by the taxpayer for the attendance at an Iowa
1 6 community college of the taxpayer or the taxpayer's spouse or
1 7 dependent. For purposes of this subsection, "tuition" means
1 8 the amount charged in accordance with section 260C.14,
1 9 subsection 2, and "fees" means the amount authorized under
1 10 section 260C.18, subsection 7.
1 11 Sec. 2. This Act, being deemed of immediate importance,
1 12 takes effect upon enactment and applies retroactively to
1 13 January 1, 1998, for tax years beginning on or after that
1 14 date.
1 15 EXPLANATION
1 16 The bill provides for a community college tax credit equal
1 17 to 50 percent of the amount of tuition and fees paid by the
1 18 taxpayer for the attendance at an Iowa community college of
1 19 the taxpayer or the taxpayer's spouse or dependent.
1 20 The bill takes effect upon enactment and applies
1 21 retroactively to January 1, 1998, for tax years beginning on
1 22 or after that date.
