  1  1    Section 1.  Section 618.1, Code 1997, is amended to read as
  1  2 follows:
  1  3    618.1  PUBLICATIONS IN ENGLISH.
  1  4    All notices, proceedings, and other matter whatsoever,
  1  5 required by law or ordinance to be published in a newspaper,
  1  6 shall be published only in the English language and in
  1  7 newspapers published wholly predominantly in the English
  1  8 language.  
  1  9                           EXPLANATION
  1 10    Code section 618.1 currently provides that notices,
  1 11 proceedings, and other matters required to be published by law
  1 12 in a newspaper be published in a newspaper which is published
  1 13 wholly in the English language.  This bill provides that a
  1 14 newspaper which is published predominantly, as opposed to
  1 15 wholly, in the English language shall suffice for purposes of
  1 16 meeting the publication requirement.
