PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 135.24, subsection 1, Code 1997, is 1 2 amended to read as follows: 1 3 1. The director shall establish within the department a 1 4 program to provide to eligible hospitals, clinics, or other 1 5 health care facilities, health care referral programs, or 1 6 charitable organizations, free medical and dental services 1 7 given on a voluntary basis by health care providers. A 1 8 participating health care provider shall register with the 1 9 department and obtain from the department a list of eligible, 1 10 participating hospitals, clinics, or other health care 1 11 facilities, health care referral programs, or charitable 1 12 organizations. 1 13 Sec. 2. Section 135.24, subsection 2, paragraphs a and b, 1 14 Code 1997, are amended to read as follows: 1 15 a. Procedures for registration of health care providers 1 16 deemed qualified by the board of medical examiners, the board 1 17 of physician assistant examiners, the board of dental 1 18 examiners, and the board of nursing. 1 19 b. Criteria for and identification of hospitals, clinics, 1 20 or other health care facilities, health care referral 1 21 programs, or charitable organizations, eligible to participate 1 22 in the provision of free medical or dental services through 1 23 the volunteer health care provider program. A health care 1 24 facility, a health care referral program, a charitable 1 25 organization, or a health care provider participating in the 1 26 program shall not bill or charge a patient for any health care 1 27 provider service provided under the volunteer health care 1 28 provider program. 1 29 Sec. 3. Section 135.24, subsection 3, paragraph b, Code 1 30 1997, is amended to read as follows: 1 31 b. Provided medical or dental services through a hospital, 1 32 clinic, or other health care facility, health care referral 1 33 program, or charitable organization listed as eligible and 1 34 participating by the department pursuant to subsection 1. 1 35 Sec. 4. Section 135.24, subsection 4, Code 1997, is 2 1 amended to read as follows: 2 2 4. For the purposes of this section, "charitable 2 3 organization" means a charitable organization within the 2 4 meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code 2 5 which has as its primary purpose the sponsorship or support of 2 6 programs designed to improve the quality, awareness, and 2 7 availability of medical or dental services to children and to 2 8 serve as a funding mechanism for provision of medical or 2 9 dental services, including but not limited to immunizations, 2 10 to children in this state. 2 11 Sec. 5. Section 135.24, subsection 5, Code 1997, is 2 12 amended to read as follows: 2 13 5. For the purposes of this section, "health care 2 14 provider" means a physician licensed under chapter 148, 150, 2 15 or 150A, a physician assistant licensed and practicing under a 2 16 supervising physician pursuant to chapter 148C, a licensed 2 17 practical nurse,ora registered nurse, or a dentist licensed 2 18 to practice under chapter 153. 2 19 EXPLANATION 2 20 This bill includes dentists in the definition of "health 2 21 care provider" for the purposes of eligibility under the 2 22 volunteer health care provider program. 2 23 LSB 3719YC 77 2 24 pf/jl/8
