PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY DODERER, CORBETT, SIEGRIST, SCHRADER, BURNETT, 1 3 and BERNAU 1 4 (COMPANION TO LSB 2765SS BY HAMMOND) 1 5 A House Resolution honoring Mr. Michael Gartner for 1 6 winning the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. 1 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Gartner's maternal grandfather, Dr. 1 8 John Charles Gay, edited the Waterloo Morning Tribune 1 9 and Mr. Gartner's father, Mr. Carl Gartner, was an 1 10 editor for the Des Moines Register for more than 40 1 11 years, ensuring that the pundit's genetic code spelled 1 12 out "newspaperman"; and 1 13 WHEREAS, whenever Mr. Gartner's education and 1 14 career paths led him from Iowa, his self-professed 1 15 love for this state eventually enticed him to return; 1 16 and 1 17 WHEREAS, Mr. Gartner's educational path took him to 1 18 Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and New 1 19 York University where he received his juris doctorate 1 20 degree; and 1 21 WHEREAS, 14 years with the Wall Street Journal as a 1 22 reporter and editor, including five years as a page 1 23 one editor, prepared him for further career successes 1 24 as executive editor, and subsequently editor and 1 25 company president of the Des Moines Register and 1 26 Tribune; general news executive and subsequently 1 27 editor of the Gannett Company's Louisville Courier- 1 28 Journal and Times; president of NBC News; and for his 1 29 current full-time duties as editor and part-owner of 1 30 The Daily Tribune of Ames; and 2 1 WHEREAS, as a columnist for USA Today and the Wall 2 2 Street Journal, commentator for Iowa public radio and 2 3 the Voice of America, and as a fellow at the Institute 2 4 of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at 2 5 Harvard University, Mr. Gartner has ably represented 2 6 this state to the rest of the country; and 2 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Gartner has been praised for 2 8 transforming The Daily Tribune into a lively, well- 2 9 received community newspaper by emphasizing local news 2 10 and writing expressively about the problems of the 2 11 community of Ames and this state; and 2 12 WHEREAS, in an address to the joint convention of 2 13 the General Assembly on Pioneer Lawmakers' Day, March 2 14 28, 1995, the inveterate logophile described Iowa as 2 15 open, clean, and honest and observed that Iowans 2 16 believe in education, hard work, equality, and 2 17 selflessness; attributes which could also describe Mr. 2 18 Gartner; and 2 19 WHEREAS, journalism awards and service to 2 20 journalism are nothing new to Mr. Gartner, who served 2 21 as president of the American Society of Newspaper 2 22 Editors (ASNE); was a member of the Pulitzer Prize 2 23 Board for 10 years, serving as chairman in his final 2 24 year on the board; received the ASNE Distinguished 2 25 Writing Award for Editorial Writing and was runner-up 2 26 for that award for the following three years; and won 2 27 the Walker Stone Award for Editorial Writing; and 2 28 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize is journalism's most 2 29 prestigious award; and 2 30 WHEREAS, it was announced on April 7, 1997, that 3 1 Michael Gartner of The Daily Tribune of Ames, Iowa, is 3 2 the recipient of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for editorial 3 3 writing, based on nine editorials he wrote during 1996 3 4 for The Daily Tribune; NOW THEREFORE, 3 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 3 6 That the House recognize and honor Mr. Michael Gartner 3 7 for his lifetime of work and achievements, especially 3 8 his outstanding accomplishment in winning the 1997 3 9 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing, and mark its 3 10 appreciation for his steadfast love and enthusiasm for 3 11 the people and the state of Iowa. 3 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of 3 13 this Resolution be prepared for presentation to Mr. 3 14 Gartner. 3 15 LSB 2765HH 77 3 16 kh/jj/8
