1 1 Section 1. DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. There is
1 2 appropriated from the general fund of the state to the
1 3 department of corrections for the fiscal year beginning July
1 4 1, 1997, and ending June 30, 1998, the following amount, or so
1 5 much thereof as is necessary, to be used for the purpose
1 6 designated:
1 7 For payment of assistance to counties for health care costs
1 8 billed to those counties for care provided to escapees from a
1 9 correctional facility administered by the department due to
1 10 injuries sustained by the escapees in automobile accidents
1 11 which occurred during calendar year 1995:
1 12 .................................................. $ 60,000
1 13 Counties eligible for assistance under this section shall
1 14 file a claim with the department for assistance within 30 days
1 15 of the effective date of this Act. The department shall
1 16 identify those counties eligible for assistance and approve
1 17 warrants for payment of the claims within 60 days of the
1 18 effective date of this Act. If the amount of the eligible
1 19 claims exceeds the amount appropriated in this section,
1 20 payment of the claims shall be prorated among the eligible
1 21 claims.
1 22 Sec. 2. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act, being deemed of
1 23 immediate importance, takes effect upon enactment.
1 24 EXPLANATION
1 25 This bill makes a fiscal year 1997-1998 appropriation to
1 26 the department of corrections for payment of assistance to
1 27 counties for health care costs billed to the counties for care
1 28 provided to escapees from a correctional facility due to
1 29 injuries sustained by the escapees in automobile accidents
1 30 which occurred in calendar year 1995.
1 31 If the amount of eligible claims exceeds the amount
1 32 appropriated, the department is to prorate the claims. A
1 33 county must file a claim within 30 days of the bill's
1 34 effective date and the department must approve warrants for
1 35 payment of the claims within 60 days of that date.
2 1 The bill takes effect upon enactment.
