1 1 Section 1. Section 261.17, Code Supplement 1997, is
1 2 amended by adding the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 1A. All classes, including liberal arts
1 4 classes, identified by the community college as required for
1 5 completion of the student's vocational-technical or career
1 6 option program shall be considered a part of the student's
1 7 vocational-technical or career option program for the purpose
1 8 of determining the student's eligibility for a grant.
1 9 Notwithstanding subsection 2, if a student is making
1 10 satisfactory academic progress but the student cannot complete
1 11 a vocational-technical or career option program in the time
1 12 frame allowed for a student to receive a vocational-technical
1 13 tuition grant as provided in subsection 2 because additional
1 14 classes are required to complete the program, the student may
1 15 continue to receive a vocational-technical tuition grant for
1 16 not more than one additional enrollment period.
1 17 EXPLANATION
1 18 This bill permits a student receiving a vocational-
1 19 technical tuition grant to continue to receive the grant for
1 20 one additional term if the student is making satisfactory
1 21 academic progress but, because additional classes are required
1 22 to complete a vocational-technical or career option program,
1 23 cannot complete the program in the time frame allowed for a
1 24 student to receive a grant.
