PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 279.10, subsection 1, Code 1997, is 1 2 amended to read as follows: 1 3 1. The school year shall begin annually onthe first day1 4ofJuly 1 andeach regularly established elementary and1 5secondary school shall begin no sooner than a day during the1 6calendar week in which the first day of September falls but no1 7later than the first Monday in December. However, if the1 8first day of September falls on a Sunday, school may begin on1 9a day during the calendar week which immediately precedes the1 10first day of Septemberend the following June 30.SchoolOnce 1 11 the school calendar commences, school shall continue for at 1 12 least one hundred eighty days, except as provided in 1 13 subsection 3, and may be maintained during the entire calendar 1 14 year. However, if the board of directors of a district 1 15 extends the school calendar because inclement weather caused 1 16 the district to temporarily close school during the regular 1 17 school calendar, the district may excuse a graduating senior 1 18 who has met district or school requirements for graduation 1 19 from attendance during the extended school calendar. A school 1 20 corporation may begin employment of personnel for in-service 1 21 training and development purposes before the date to begin 1 22 elementary and secondary school. 1 23 Sec. 2. Section 257.17, Code 1997, is repealed. 1 24 EXPLANATION 1 25 This bill eliminates the start date for the school 1 26 calendar. Currently, schools must begin their school calendar 1 27 year no sooner than a day during the calendar week in which 1 28 the first day of September falls and no later than the first 1 29 Monday in December. The bill also repeals a Code section that 1 30 penalizes schools by reducing their state aid payments if they 1 31 begin their calendars early. The bill reiterates that an 1 32 annual school year begins on July 1 and ends the following 1 33 June 30 and that the 180 continual school days must fall 1 34 within the period. 1 35 LSB 3803HH 77 2 1 kh/jl/8
