1 1 Section 1. Section 622A.4, Code 1997, is amended to read
1 2 as follows:
1 3 622A.4 FEE SET BY COURT – PAYMENT.
1 4 Every interpreter appointed by a court or administrative
1 5 agency shall receive a fee to be set by the court or
1 6 administrative agency. If the interpreter is appointed in a
1 7 civil proceeding which is not a proceeding before an
1 8 administrative agency, the judicial department shall pay the
1 9 fee set by the court.
1 10 EXPLANATION
1 11 This bill provides that the judicial department shall pay
1 12 the fees of an interpreter for a person who does not speak or
1 13 understand English in all civil proceedings which are not
1 14 before an administrative agency. The bill does not change the
1 15 provision in Code section 622A.3 that the cost of an
1 16 interpreter in a civil proceeding shall be taxed as court
1 17 costs.
