1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 280.24 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY
1 2 SCHEDULING.
1 3 It is the intent of the general assembly to encourage
1 4 student involvement in home, family, and community activities
1 5 as well as involvement in the extracurricular activity and
1 6 interscholastic athletic competition opportunities available
1 7 through the public schools. To facilitate a well-rounded
1 8 education experience and promote student involvement in non-
1 9 school-related activities, the board of directors of each
1 10 public school district shall ensure that a public school, high
1 11 school athletic association, or other school activity
1 12 association shall not schedule any extracurricular activities
1 13 after six o'clock p.m. on Wednesday evenings during periods
1 14 when school is in session.
1 15 Sec. 2. This Act is applicable to school years beginning
1 16 on or after July 1, 1998.
1 17 EXPLANATION
1 18 This bill provides that in order to facilitate and
1 19 encourage the involvement of students in non-school-related
1 20 activities involving home, family, and their community, as
1 21 well as participation in extracurricular activities and
1 22 interscholastic athletic competitions, the board of directors
1 23 of each public school district shall ensure that, beginning
1 24 with the 1998-1999 school year, no extracurricular activities
1 25 shall be scheduled after 6:00 p.m. each Wednesday when school
1 26 is in session.
