1 1 Section 1. Section 422.7, Code 1997, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 35. Subtract the interest paid on any
1 4 student loans made pursuant to a federal or state program or
1 5 through the educational institution.
1 6 Sec. 2. This Act applies retroactively to January 1, 1997,
1 7 for tax years beginning on or after that date.
1 8 EXPLANATION
1 9 This bill provides a deduction under the individual income
1 10 tax of interest paid on any student loans made pursuant to a
1 11 federal or state program or through the educational
1 12 institution. The bill is retroactively applicable to January
1 13 1, 1997, for tax years beginning on or after that date.
