COMMITTEE BUSINESS

1. Procedural Business.
Call to Order. Chairperson Jensen called the meeting to order at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 1997, in Committee Room 22, State Capitol, Des Moines, Iowa.
Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
2. Agenda Items.
Ms. Diane Bolender, Director, Legislative Service Bureau, provided an explanation of a proposal from the Tour Guides for development of an Outreach Program in which the Tour Guides would solicit grant funding for the development of a 45-minute, one-act play, entitled "Capitol Spirit" which would depict, in dramatic form, the vision, design, and creation of the Capitol, including the role of the General Assembly in the project. According to Ms. Bolender, the primary purposes of the program are to introduce the State Capitol to Iowa school children who otherwise are unable to visit the Capitol, to encourage schools to find the means to bring students to Des Moines to visit the State Capitol in person, and to serve as an introduction to the State Capitol for students who will be visiting. The play is intended to educate students about the role the State Capitol has played in Iowa history and to generate interest in state government and the legislative branch of government. Ms. Bolender stated that the Tour Guides request that the General Assembly (through the Legislative Council) endorse this concept for use in soliciting grant funding to support the project.
In response to a question by Senator Judge, Ms. Bolender stated that the Legislative Service Bureau will review the script of the play and supporting curriculum and that copies of the script curriculum will be sent to the members of the Administration Committee for review.
Senator Jensen expressed support for the project. Members of the Committee voted without objection to recommend that the Legislative Council endorse the concept.
3. Materials Distributed at the Meeting.
