  1  1    Section 1.  Section 321.449, unnumbered paragraph 5, Code
  1  2 Supplement 1995, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    Notwithstanding other provisions of this section, rules
  1  4 adopted under this section concerning physical and medical
  1  5 qualifications for drivers of commercial vehicles engaged in
  1  6 intrastate commerce shall not be construed as disqualifying
  1  7 any individual who was employed as a driver of commercial
  1  8 vehicles engaged in intrastate commerce whose physical or
  1  9 medical condition existed prior to January 1, 1988 July 29,
  1 10 1996.
  1 11    Sec. 2.  EFFECTIVE DATE.  This Act, being deemed of
  1 12 immediate importance, takes effect upon enactment.  
  1 13                           EXPLANATION
  1 14    This bill extends an exemption from federal motor carrier
  1 15 safety regulations from January 1, 1988, to July 29, 1996, for
  1 16 drivers of commercial vehicles engaged in intrastate commerce
  1 17 who are otherwise medically unqualified.
  1 18    This bill is effective upon enactment.
