PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 80D.7, Code 1995, is amended to read as 1 2 follows: 1 3 80D.7 CARRYING WEAPONS. 1 4 A member of a reserve force shall not carry a weapon in the 1 5 line of duty until the member has been approved by the 1 6 governing body and certified by the Iowa law enforcement 1 7 academy council to carry weapons. After approval and 1 8 certification, a reserve peace officer may carry a weaponin1 9the line of dutyonly when authorized by the chief of police, 1 10 sheriff, or commissioner of public safety or the 1 11 commissioner's designee, as the case may be. 1 12 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 724.2A PEACE OFFICER DEFINED. 1 13 As used in this chapter regarding the obtaining of a permit 1 14 for, training for, and the carrying of weapons, "peace 1 15 officer" includes a reserve peace officer as defined in 1 16 section 80D.1A. 1 17 EXPLANATION 1 18 This bill provides that reserve peace officers who have 1 19 been certified by the Iowa law enforcement academy council to 1 20 carry weapons may obtain a professional permit to carry 1 21 weapons and carry weapons in the same manner as regular peace 1 22 officers if authorized to by the chief of police, sheriff, or 1 23 commissioner of public safety, as the case may be. 1 24 Professional permits to carry weapons issued to regular peace 1 25 officers authorize peace officers to carry weapons anywhere in 1 26 the state at all times. 1 27 LSB 3084XS 76 1 28 mk/cf/24
