1 3 (COMPANION TO LSB 1348HH BY BELL)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution supporting the United Nations'
1 5 recognition of the Republic of China on Taiwan.
1 6 WHEREAS, the Republic of China was a founding
1 7 member of the United Nations in 1945, and was
1 8 consistently faithful to the goals and objectives of
1 9 the United Nations for 26 years; and
1 10 WHEREAS, in 1971, the United Nations General
1 11 Assembly excluded the Republic of China in order to
1 12 recognize the mainland People's Republic of China; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the United Nations has allowed other
1 14 divided countries such as East and West Germany and
1 15 North and South Korea to be equal members of the
1 16 United Nations organization; and
1 17 WHEREAS, on August 6, 1993, seven Central American
1 18 countries presented an initiative to the Secretary
1 19 General of the United Nations, calling for the
1 20 Republic of China's readmission to the United Nations;
1 21 and
1 22 WHEREAS, readmission of the Republic of China would
1 23 be in keeping with the primary mission of the United
1 24 Nations of promoting international peace and security;
1 25 and
1 26 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa and several cities in
1 27 Iowa have established formal sister state and sister
1 28 city relationships with regions and cities in the
1 29 Republic of China; and
1 30 WHEREAS, the United States and Iowa are significant
2 1 trading partners as evidenced by the fact that the
2 2 Republic of China has purchased more than $16 billion
2 3 in American products this past year; NOW THEREFORE,
2 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 5 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, that the Iowa General
2 6 Assembly supports the United Nations' recognition and
2 7 readmission of the Republic of China.
2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 9 resolution be transmitted to the United Nations
2 10 General Assembly and the Honorable Bill Clinton,
2 11 President of the United States.
