1 1 Section 1. Section 216A.5, Code 1995, is repealed.
1 2 EXPLANATION
1 3 This bill provides for the continued operation of the
1 4 department of human rights. Iowa Code section 216A.5 provides
1 5 that the department of human rights will cease to exist
1 6 effective July 1, 1997. The bill deletes this provision,
1 7 enabling the department to continue its operations
1 8 indefinitely.
1 9 BACKGROUND STATEMENT
1 10 SUBMITTED BY THE AGENCY
1 11 The Iowa Code currently provides that the department of
1 12 human rights (DHR) will cease to exist effective July 1, 1997,
1 13 unless language contained in Code section 216A.5 is deleted.
1 14 The department of human rights feels that the divisions and
1 15 commissions making up the agency desire to maintain the
1 16 department as is, and that there is a need for a separate
1 17 agency like DHR to provide services and assistance to and
1 18 advocacy for the various populations the department
1 19 represents.
