1 1 Section 1. Section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph b,
1 2 unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 1995, is amended to read as
1 3 follows:
1 4 Five units of the social studies including instruction in
1 5 voting statutes and procedures, voter registration
1 6 requirements, the use of paper ballots and voting machines in
1 7 the election process, and the method of acquiring and casting
1 8 an absentee ballot. All students shall complete a minimum of
1 9 one-half unit of United States government and one unit of
1 10 United States history. The unit of United States history
1 11 shall include instruction in the declaration of independence,
1 12 the northwest ordinance, the mayflower compact, the national
1 13 anthem, and the pledge of allegiance. The one-half unit of
1 14 United States government shall include the voting procedure as
1 15 described in this lettered paragraph and section 280.9A. The
1 16 government instruction shall also include a study of the
1 17 Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights
1 18 contained in the Constitution and an assessment of a student's
1 19 knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill amends the education standards required of each
1 22 school and school district in Iowa to direct schools and
1 23 school districts to include instruction in the declaration of
1 24 independence, the northwest ordinance, the mayflower compact,
1 25 the national anthem, and the pledge of allegiance, in the unit
1 26 of United States history required to be taught in grades nine
1 27 through 12.
