1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO HSB 49)
1 4 A House Resolution providing special recognition and
1 5 support to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's
1 6 state parks system and urging all citizens and leaders
1 7 in government, academia, and business to give
1 8 special recognition to the many and varied services
1 9 our state parks have given for three-quarters of a
1 10 century.
1 11 WHEREAS, members of the Iowa House of
1 12 Representatives, including members serving on the
1 13 Committee on Natural Resources, appreciate the great
1 14 contribution state parks have made to the development
1 15 and well-being of Iowa, and appreciate the great value
1 16 state parks provide for citizens and visitors as
1 17 places of quiet beauty; and
1 18 WHEREAS, Backbone State Park, the first to be set
1 19 aside as a state park, was dedicated in 1920, making
1 20 1995 a special seventy-fifth anniversary year for
1 21 state parks and an appropriate time to reflect on the
1 22 fact that Iowa state parks have passed the test of
1 23 time and have been developed and supported to the
1 24 point where there are now over eighty state parks and
1 25 recreation areas within the system; and
1 26 WHEREAS, state parks represent an opportunity for
1 27 people to camp, fish, swim, hike, bike, picnic, and,
1 28 in general, enjoy pleasant family outings and peaceful
1 29 repose in scenic surroundings; and
1 30 WHEREAS, state parks include unique natural areas
2 1 for Iowa's wildlife, places to assure perpetuation of
2 2 animal and plant diversity, and important sites for
2 3 scientific study of natural, archaeological, and
2 4 geological features; and
2 5 WHEREAS, nearly every Iowa citizen has been
2 6 affected in a positive manner at some point in their
2 7 lives by the presence and availability of state parks;
2 8 NOW THEREFORE,
2 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 10 That the House of Representatives, including members
2 11 serving on the Committee on Natural Resources, lend
2 12 recognition and support to the seventy-fifth
2 13 anniversary of Iowa's state parks system by inviting
2 14 Iowa citizens and leaders to visit state parks,
2 15 participate in celebrating seventy-five successful
2 16 years of public service and enjoyment, and use this
2 17 special year to acknowledge and reaffirm the
2 18 importance of state parks to Iowa's continued well-
2 19 being and improvement.
2 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
2 21 Representatives, including members serving on the
2 22 Committee on Natural Resources, recognize this
2 23 anniversary year as an ideal time wherein appropriate
2 24 actions may be taken to assure that Iowa's state parks
2 25 continue accommodating Iowa citizens for another
2 26 seventy-five years.
2 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 28 resolution be transmitted to the Governor of Iowa and
2 29 that all branches and offices of government statewide
2 30 be encouraged to join in the celebration of the
3 1 seventy-fifth anniversary of the state parks system
3 2 that has served citizens and visitors for three-
3 3 quarters of a century and will continue to serve
3 4 citizens and visitors into the next century.
