PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 42.4, subsection 2, Code 1995, is 1 2 amended to read as follows: 1 3 2. To the extent consistent with subsection 1,district1 4 the following shall apply: 1 5 a. District boundaries shall coincide with the boundaries 1 6 of political subdivisions of the state. 1 7 b. The number of counties and cities divided among more 1 8 than one district shall be as small as possible. 1 9 c. When there is a choice between dividing local political 1 10 subdivisions, the more populous subdivisions shall be divided 1 11 before the less populous, but this statement. However, if 1 12 there is a choice between dividing a city other than along the 1 13 county line into an additional district or dividing a 1 14 township, the township shall be divided. This paragraph does 1 15 not apply to a legislative district boundary drawn along a 1 16 county line which passes through a city that lies in more than 1 17 one county. 1 18 EXPLANATION 1 19 This bill amends the redistricting law to require that, 1 20 when there is a choice between dividing a township or dividing 1 21 a city other than along a county line into an additional 1 22 district, the township shall be divided even if the city is 1 23 more populous than the township. 1 24 LSB 1014HH 76 1 25 sc/sc/14
