PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY FALLON, CONNORS, CATALDO, BAKER, SCHRADER, 1 3 RUNNING, SHOULTZ, MAY, DODERER, HOLVECK, O'BRIEN, 1 4 MASCHER, KOENIGS, MERTZ, BURNETT, WARNSTADT, 1 5 DREES, McCOY, BERNAU, WEIGEL, BRAMMER, HARPER, 1 6 WISE, LARKIN, WITT, JOCHUM, NELSON of 1 7 Pottawattamie, OLLIE, BELL, MYERS, COHOON, BRAND, 1 8 MURPHY, and MORELAND 1 9 A Concurrent Resolution urging support of the striking 1 10 workers at Bridgestone/Firestone in Des Moines 1 11 through legislation and other means. 1 12 WHEREAS, some 1,300 Iowa workers are engaging in 1 13 their legal right to strike over a contract dispute 1 14 with the owners of Bridgestone/Firestone; and 1 15 WHEREAS, these same 1,300 are now in jeopardy of 1 16 losing their jobs for engaging in this lawful strike; 1 17 and 1 18 WHEREAS, the loss of their livelihood will have a 1 19 devastating effect on these 1,300 workers, their 1 20 families, and their communities; and 1 21 WHEREAS, the right to strike is a hollow and mean- 1 22 ingless right if permanent replacement workers can be 1 23 hired to replace striking workers; and 1 24 WHEREAS, Bridgestone/Firestone has received over 1 25 $1.2 million in public funding including over $500,000 1 26 from the state of Iowa and $500,000 to train some of 1 27 these same employees; and 1 28 WHEREAS, the permanent hiring of striker 1 29 replacement workers is extremely uncommon in every 1 30 industrial country, including Japan, the home of 2 1 Bridgestone/Firestone, except in the United States and 2 2 South Africa; NOW THEREFORE, 2 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 2 4 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa congressional 2 5 delegation is urged to join United States Senator Tom 2 6 Harkin in support of his legislation barring the 2 7 hiring of striker replacement workers. 2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa congressional 2 9 delegation ask for a congressional hearing on unfair 2 10 labor practices by foreign-owned companies. 2 11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa congressional 2 12 delegation join the Iowa House of Representatives and 2 13 the Iowa Senate in urging both sides in the 2 14 Bridgestone/Firestone labor dispute to return to the 2 15 bargaining table in an attempt to resolve this 2 16 dispute. 2 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa House of 2 18 Representatives and the Iowa Senate call on Governor 2 19 Terry Branstad to use his good offices to intercede in 2 20 this contract dispute in an attempt to resolve it and 2 21 save the jobs of 1,300 Iowans. 2 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this 2 23 resolution be sent to the Governor, the President of 2 24 the United States, the President of the United States 2 25 Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of 2 26 Representatives, and members of Iowa's congressional 2 27 delegation. 2 28 LSB 1573HH 76 2 29 ec/jw/5
