2antique motor vehicles and sports cars.
3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 321.1, Code 2017, is amended by adding
2the following new subsection:
3   NEW SUBSECTION.  76A.  “Sports car” means a motor vehicle
4capable of exceeding one hundred thirty miles per hour and
5originally manufactured with one door on the driver’s side of
6the vehicle, one door on the passenger’s side of the vehicle,
7and a front bumper that sits eight inches from the ground or
8less.
9   Sec. 2.  Section 321.37, subsection 2, Code 2017, is amended
10to read as follows:
   112.  Registration plates issued for a A motor vehicle
12which is model year 1948 or older, and is reconstructed or
13specially constructed vehicles built to resemble a model year
141948 vehicle or older, is a sports car, or is registered as
15an antique vehicle under section 321.115,
other than a truck
16registered for more than five tons, autocycle, motorcycle, or
17truck tractor, may display one registration plate on the rear
18of the vehicle if the other registration plate issued to the
19vehicle is carried in the vehicle at all times when the vehicle
20is operated on a public highway.
21EXPLANATION
22The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
23the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   24Current law permits motor vehicles which are model year
251948 or older, or reconstructed or specially constructed to
26resemble a model year 1948 vehicle or older, other than a truck
27registered for more than five tons, autocycle, motorcycle, or
28truck tractor, to display one registration plate on the rear
29of the vehicle if the other registration plate issued to the
30vehicle is carried in the vehicle at all times when the vehicle
31is operated on a public highway.
   32This bill applies that provision to sports cars and antique
33vehicles. The bill defines “sports car” to mean a vehicle
34capable of exceeding 130 miles per hour and originally
35manufactured with one door on the driver’s side of the vehicle,

2bumper that sits eight inches from the ground or less. Under
3current law, an antique vehicle is a vehicle 25 years old or
4older that is registered under Code section 321.115.
