3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 481A.123, subsection 1, Code 2023, is
2amended to read as follows:
   31.  A In addition to limits imposed in subsection 1A, a
4 person shall not discharge a firearm or shoot or attempt to
5shoot a game or fur-bearing animal within two hundred yards of
6a building inhabited by people or domestic livestock or within
7two hundred yards of a feedlot unless the owner or tenant has
8given consent. However, within the corporate limits of a city,
9a person may take deer with a firearm within fifty yards of
10a building inhabited by people or domestic livestock, or a
11feedlot pursuant to an approved special deer population control
12plan, if the person obtains permission of the owner or tenant
13of the building or feedlot.
14   Sec. 2.  Section 481A.123, Code 2023, is amended by adding
15the following new subsection:
16   NEW SUBSECTION.  1A.  A person shall not use a bow within
17seventy-five yards of the premises of a school to take or
18attempt to take a game or fur-bearing animal. A person shall
19not use a firearm or other hunting device, other than a bow,
20within one-half mile of the premises of a school to take or
21attempt to take a game or fur-bearing animal.
22EXPLANATION
23The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
24the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   25This bill relates to hunting near schools. Current law
26generally prohibits a person from discharging a firearm or
27shooting or attempting to shoot game or fur-bearing animals
28within 200 yards of a building inhabited by people or domestic
29livestock or within 200 yards of a feedlot. The bill prohibits
30a person from using a bow within 75 yards of the premises of a
31school to take or attempt to take a game or fur-bearing animal.
32Additionally, the bill prohibits a person from using a firearm
33or other hunting device, other than a bow, within one-half mile
34of the premises of a school to take or attempt to take a game or
35fur-bearing animal. A person who violates the bill is subject
