Senate Study Bill 3086 - IntroducedA Bill ForAn Act 1relating to excuse from jury service for persons at
2least seventy-two years of age.
3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 607A.5, Code 2022, is amended to read as
2follows:
   3607A.5  Automatic excuse from jury service.
   41.  A person shall be excused from jury service if the
5person submits written documentation verifying, to the court’s
6satisfaction, that the person is solely responsible for the
7daily care of a person with a permanent disability living
8in the person’s household and that the performance of juror
9service would cause substantial risk of injury to the health of
10the person with a disability, or that the person is the mother
11of a breastfed child and is responsible for the daily care of
12the child. However, if the person is regularly employed at a
13location other than the person’s household, the person shall
14not be excused under this section subsection.
   152.  A person shall be excused from jury service if the person
16is at least seventy-two years of age and notifies the court
17that the person is at least seventy-two years of age and wishes
18to be exempted from jury service.
19EXPLANATION
20The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
21the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   22This bill relates to automatic excuses from jury service.
23The bill provides that a person shall be excused from jury
24service if the person is at least 72 years of age and notifies
25the court that the person is at least 72 years of age and wishes
26to be exempted from jury service.
