3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. Section 282.18, subsection 11, paragraph a,
2unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 2022, is amended to read as
3follows:
4A pupil who participates in open enrollment for purposes of
5attending a grade in grades nine through twelve in a school
6district other than the district of residence is ineligible to
7participate in varsity interscholastic athletic contests and
8athletic competitions during the pupil’s first ninety school
9 calendar days of enrollment in the district. However, a pupil
10may participate immediately in a varsity interscholastic sport
11under any of the following circumstances:
12EXPLANATION
13The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
14the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
15This bill changes the period of time a student must wait to
16participate in varsity interscholastic athletic contests and
17competitions from 90 school days to 90 calendar days after the
18student open enrolls in a new school district.
