3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  331.662  Residency of deputy
2sheriffs.
   3A deputy sheriff employed by an office of county sheriff
4shall, by July 1, 2023, reside in the county which elected
5the county sheriff. In the case of a multicounty sheriff, as
6provided for in section 331.661, a deputy sheriff employed by a
7multicounty sheriff shall reside in one of the counties sharing
8the services of the county sheriff.
9   Sec. 2.  NEW SECTION.  362.10A  Residency of police officers.
   10A police officer employed by a municipal police department
11shall, by July 1, 2023, reside in the city which the municipal
12police department represents.
13EXPLANATION
14The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   16This bill relates to residency requirements for deputy
17sheriffs and police officers.
   18The bill provides that a deputy sheriff employed by an office
19of county sheriff shall reside in the county which elected the
20county sheriff. In the case of a multicounty sheriff, a deputy
21sheriff employed by a multicounty sheriff shall reside in one
22of the counties sharing the services of the county sheriff.
   23The bill provides that a police officer employed by a
24municipal police department shall reside in the city which the
25municipal police department represents.
   26The residency requirements for deputy sheriffs and police
27officers must be complied with by July 1, 2023.
