4BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  148D.7  Resident physician medical
2liability insurance premium reimbursement.
   31.  A private or public hospital or affiliated nonprofit
4organization that has a resident physician program in Iowa
5may annually apply to the department of public health to
6be reimbursed for the cost of the hospital’s or affiliated
7nonprofit organizations’ medical liability insurance premiums
8attributable to resident physicians licensed pursuant to
9section 148.5 and employed by the hospital or affiliated
10nonprofit organization.
   112.  The department of public health may adopt rules pursuant
12to chapter 17A to implement and administer this section.
   133.  This section does not apply to a hospital to which
14chapter 669 applies.
15EXPLANATION
16The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
17the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   18This bill relates to the reimbursement of resident
19physicians medical liability insurance premiums to certain
20hospitals and affiliated nonprofit organizations.
   21The bill provides that a private or public hospital or an
22affiliated nonprofit organization that has a resident physician
23program may apply to the department of public health to be
24reimbursed for the cost of the medical liability insurance
25premiums attributed to an employed resident physician, licensed
26pursuant to Code section 148.5, of the hospital or affiliated
27nonprofit organization. The department of public health may
28adopt rules to implement and administer the bill.
   29The bill does not apply to hospitals to which Code chapter
30669 (state tort claims) applies.
