3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1 Section 1. Section 483A.8, subsection 6, Code 2021, is
2amended to read as follows:
36. The commission shall provide by rule for the annual
4issuance to a nonresident of a nonresident antlerless deer
5hunting license that is valid for use only during the period
6beginning on December 24 and ending at sunset on January 2 of
7the following year and costs an amount established by rules
8adopted pursuant to section 483A.1. A nonresident hunting deer
9with a license issued under this subsection shall be otherwise
10qualified to hunt deer in this state and shall purchase a
11nonresident annual hunting license that includes the wildlife
12habitat fee, and pay the one dollar fee for the purpose of
13deer herd population management as provided in subsection
143. In addition to other methods of take that the commission
15authorizes for the season, the commission shall authorize a
16nonresident hunting deer with a license issued under this
17subsection to use a bow, muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun, or
18rifle firing straight wall ammunition. Pursuant to this
19subsection, the commission shall make available for issuance
20only the remaining nonresident antlerless deer hunting licenses
21allocated under subsection 3 that have not yet been issued for
22the current year’s nonresident antlerless deer hunting seasons.
23EXPLANATION
24The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
25the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
26This bill relates to methods of take allowed during the
27nonresident antlerless deer holiday season.
28Current law creates a nonresident antlerless deer hunting
29season that begins on December 24 and ends on January 2. The
30natural resource commission currently allows a nonresident
31hunting with a license valid for the nonresident antlerless
32deer holiday season to hunt using a bow, muzzleloader, or
33handgun. The bill requires the commission to authorize
34a nonresident hunting deer with a license valid for the
35nonresident antlerless deer holiday season to hunt with a bow,
-1-1muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun, or rifle firing straight wall
2ammunition, in addition to any other methods of take that the
3commission authorizes for the season.
