2BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 607A.8, subsection 1, Code 2021, is
2amended to read as follows:
   31.  A grand juror and a petit juror in all courts shall
4receive thirty dollars per day the hourly rate that public
5defenders earn on all cases other class “A” and “B” felonies
6pursuant to section 815.7, subsection 5,
as compensation for
7each day’s service or attendance, including attendance required
8for the purpose of being considered for service. The supreme
9court may adopt rules that allow additional compensation for
10jurors whose attendance and service exceeds seven days.
11   Sec. 2.  Section 622.69, subsection 1, Code 2021, is amended
12to read as follows:
   131.  Witnesses shall receive ten dollars per day the hourly
14rate that public defenders earn on all cases other class “A”
15and “B” felonies pursuant to section 815.7, subsection 5,

16 for each full day’s attendance, and five dollars for each
17attendance less than a full day,
and mileage expenses pursuant
18to section 602.1509 for each mile actually traveled.
19EXPLANATION
20The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
21the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   22This bill increases juror and witness compensation.
   23Under the bill, jurors and witnesses earn per day the hourly
24rate that public defenders earn on all cases other than class
25“A” felonies and class “B” felonies, as provided for in Code
26section 815.7(5), which is $63. Under current law, juror
27compensation is $30 per day, and witness compensation is $10
28for a full day’s attendance and $5 for attendance of less than
29a full day.
