3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  279.73  Student pronoun preference
2— notification and disclosure.
   3If a student in a school district will be asked by a school
4employee or in a school communication to identify the pronoun
5by which the student prefers to be called, or will be asked to
6take a survey on pronoun preference, the school district shall
7provide written notification of such action to the parent or
8guardian of the student at least one week before such action
9occurs. After the identification or survey has occurred, the
10school district shall provide the student’s identification
11or survey response to the student’s parent or guardian upon
12request.
13EXPLANATION
14The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
15the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   16This bill requires a school district, if a student will be
17asked by a school employee or in a school communication to
18identify the pronoun by which the student prefers to be called,
19or will be asked to take a survey on pronoun preference, to
20provide written notification of such action to the parent or
21guardian of the student at least one week before such action
22occurs. After the identification or survey has occurred, the
23bill requires the school district to provide the student’s
24identification or survey response to the student’s parent or
25guardian upon request.
