3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 691.5, Code 2021, is amended to read as
2follows:
   3691.5  State medical examiner — accreditation.
   41.  The office and position of state medical examiner
5is established for administrative purposes within the Iowa
6department of public health. Other state agencies shall
7cooperate with the state medical examiner in the use of
8state-owned facilities when appropriate for the performance of
9nonadministrative duties of the state medical examiner. The
10state medical examiner shall be a physician and surgeon or
11osteopathic physician and surgeon, be licensed to practice
12medicine in the state of Iowa, and be board certified or
13eligible to be board certified in anatomic and forensic
14pathology by the American board of pathology. The state
15medical examiner shall be appointed by and serve at the
16pleasure of the director of public health upon the advice of
17and in consultation with the director of public safety and
18the governor. The state medical examiner, in consultation
19with the director of public health, shall be responsible for
20developing and administering the medical examiner’s budget
21and for employment of medical examiner staff and assistants.
22The state medical examiner may be a faculty member of the
23university of Iowa college of medicine or the college of law at
24the university of Iowa, and any of the examiner’s assistants or
25staff may be members of the faculty or staff of the university
26of Iowa college of medicine or the college of law at the
27university of Iowa.
   282.  The office of the state medical examiner shall be deemed
29to be an accredited state medical examiner for all purposes in
30this state. No other entity shall provide an accreditation for
31the office of the state medical examiner.
32EXPLANATION
33The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
34the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   35This bill relates to the accreditation of the state medical
-1-1examiner. The bill requires that the office of the state
2medical examiner shall be deemed to be an accredited state
3medical examiner for all purposes in this state. The bill
4prohibits any other entity from offering an accreditation for
5the office of the state medical examiner.
