Senate Resolution 109 - Introduced

An Act 1recognizing Carson King as an outstanding
2citizen of the State of Iowa for his support of the
3University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
4WHEREAS, on September 14, 2019, Carson King held up
5a sign during ESPN’s College GameDay visit to Ames for
6the Iowa vs.Iowa State football game reading “Busch
7Light Supply Needs Replenished” and listing his Venmo
8account;and
9WHEREAS, Mr.King holding his sign appeared
10on-screen during the filming of the game, resulting
11in hundreds of dollars being deposited in his Venmo
12account;and
13WHEREAS, Mr.King informed his family that he
14would donate the money to the Stead Family Children’s
15Hospital in Iowa City;and
16WHEREAS, Mr.King’s mother, Dana Archer-King, posted
17her son’s fundraiser on Facebook, causing local and
18national media to take interest in the story;and
19WHEREAS, on September 17, 2019, Busch Light and
20Venmo both pledged to match whatever money Mr.King was
21able to raise through the end of September;and
22WHEREAS, after Mr.King appeared on Scott Van Pelt’s
23“One Big Thing”, “Good Morning America”, NBC News,
24CNN, and “Fox and Friends”, other companies, including
25Northwest Mutual, Prairie Meadows Casino, Dewitt
26Construction, and Goldie’s Ice Cream Shoppe began
27making donations;and
28WHEREAS, by the end of September, 2019, donations,
-1-1including the matching gifts, reached $2,959,336;and
2WHEREAS, West Des Moines-based Doll Distributing,
3the local distributor for Busch Light, sought donations
4from its distributors from across the state to boost
5donations to $3,000,000;and
6WHEREAS, in total, over 35,000 Venmo users donated
7to Mr.King’s fundraiser, with donations coming from
8all 50 states;and
9WHEREAS, on October 11, 2019, Mr.King presented a
10check for $3,004,202.14 to the University of Iowa Stead
11Family Children’s Hospital;NOW THEREFORE,
   12BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
13recognizes Carson King as an outstanding citizen of the
14State of Iowa for his support of the University of Iowa
15Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
