A Concurrent Resolution 1honoring the memory of Harold
2Keller as one of the Marines who raised the United
3States flag at Iwo Jima.
4WHEREAS, Harold Keller, born and raised in Brooklyn,
5Iowa, enlisted in the United States Marines following
6the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States
7entrance into World War II;and
8WHEREAS, Corporal Harold Keller served and fought as
9a Marine in several battles during the Allied offensive
10in the Pacific;and
11WHEREAS, Corporal Keller was a part of the force
12that landed and fought on Iwo Jima, one of the fiercest
13and bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater;and
14WHEREAS, on February 23, 1945, photographer Joe
15Rosenthal captured the image of six Marines raising the
16United States flag on Mount Suribachi indicating the
17Allies had won the battle of Iwo Jima;and
18WHEREAS, the iconic photograph of Marines raising
19the United States flag at Iwo Jima became a powerful
20symbol of the determination of all who served and
21fought in the Pacific theater, and in all theaters of
22war, during World War II;and
23WHEREAS, recent historical research has determined
24that one of the Marines in that iconic photograph was
25Corporal Keller;NOW THEREFORE,
   26BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
27SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly recognizes
28and honors the memory of Harold Keller as one of the

2flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima
3in World War II.
