3BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:
1   Section 1.  Section 216E.1, Code 2019, is amended by adding
2the following new subsection:
3   NEW SUBSECTION.  14.  “Telecoil assistive device” means a
4tiny coil of wire around a core that supplements or replaces an
5input device within a hearing assistive device that will induce
6an electric current in the coil when it is in the presence of
7a magnetic field.
8   Sec. 2.  NEW SECTION.  216E.5A  Telecoil assistive device
9notification requirements.
   101.  At the time of receiving a purchase order for a hearing
11assistive device is received, the assistive device dealer
12or assistive device lessor shall provide the consumer with
13written information pertaining to a telecoil assistive device,
14including all of the following:
   15a.  The setting on the telecoil assistive device.
   16b.  The compatibility of the telecoil assistive device
17with other assistive devices which are compliant with the
18federal Americans with Disabilities Act pursuant to 42 U.S.C.
19§12101-12117.
   202.  A consumer receiving the written information shall sign
21a copy of the written information which shall be retained by
22the assistive device dealer or assistive device lessor for the
23period corresponding to the number of years of warranty set out
24by the manufacturers.
25   Sec. 3.  APPLICABILITY.  This Act applies to hearing
26assistive device purchase orders received on or after September
271, 2019.
28EXPLANATION
29The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
30the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly.
   31This bill relates to telecoil assistive devices.
   32The bill defines a telecoil assistive device as a tiny coil
33of wire around a core that supplements or replaces an input
34device within a hearing assistive device that will induce an
35electric current in the coil when it is in the presence of a

   2The bill provides that at the time of receiving an order
3for a hearing assistive device, the consumer will be provided
4written information by the assistive device dealer or assistive
5device lessor related to a telecoil assistive device.
   6The bill provides that the written information shall
7include the setting on the telecoil assistive device and the
8compatibility of the device with other assistive devices which
9are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
   10The bill requires that a copy of the written information
11signed by the consumer be retained by the assistive device
12dealer or assistive device manufacturer for the period
13corresponding to the number of years of warranty set out by the
14manufacturer.
   15The bill applies to telecoil purchase orders received on or
16after September 1, 2019.
