George Hepner, of whose boyhood little is known, was born August 1805 in Kentucky. He gained his education in Kentucky, clerked in a store, and taught school while studying law. He migrated to Des Moines County and married Elizabeth Whiteaker on December 13, 1835, in Des Moines County. In 1836 he was the first sheriff of Des Moines County. He was admitted to the bar and while living there he formed a lasting friendship with Colonel Augustus C. Dodge. In 1851 he removed to St. Mary, Mills County, and was an attorney and also had a nursery at that place. He was appointed by President Pierce as an agent for the Omaha, Pawnee, and Otoe tribes. He died April 4, 1857, in St. Mary, Iowa.
