One of the early settlers of the West taking up his residence in Sioux City, in 1856. The next year he was nominated for the legislature from the district, then composed of Pottawattamie, Harrison, Crawford, Monona, Woodbury, and other northwestern counties. He was elected defeating by a large majority his Republican competitor, Hon. J. W. Denison and served his district with zeal and efficiency. He continued to reside in Sioux City until he removed to Council Bluffs. He was a man of natural urbanity and pleasing address, just and honorable, and these characteristics won for him a large circle of warm friends. He was a Mason and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
