Born in 1802 in Pennsylvania. Mr. Carlton married Ann Meek in 1836, and came to Iowa settling in Van Buren County. The first district school-house was put up in 1844 in the village of Bonaparte, and Mr. Charlton was the schools first teacher. He also was the first postmaster appointed to that position on January 19, 1942. Mr. Carlton represented Van Buren County in the 1844 Constitutional Convention in Iowa City. He died August 15, 1878, in Lancaster, Nebraska.
