1 An Act relating to eligible veterans for purposes of the injured
2 veterans grant program.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 1 Section 1. Section 35A.14, subsection 1, Code 2007, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 1. For the purposes of this section, "veteran" means a any
1 4 of the following:
1 5 a. A resident of this state who is or was a member of the
1 6 national guard, reserve, or regular component of the armed
1 7 forces of the United States who has served on active duty at
1 8 any time after September 11, 2001, and, if discharged, was
1 9 discharged under honorable conditions.
1 10 b. A nonresident of this state who is or was a member of a
1 11 national guard unit located in this state prior to alert for
1 12 mobilization who has served on active duty at any time after
1 13 September 11, 2001, was injured while serving in the national
1 14 guard unit located in this state, is not eligible to receive a
1 15 similar grant from another state for that injury, and, if
1 16 discharged, was discharged under honorable conditions.
1 17 Sec. 2. Section 35A.14, subsection 5, paragraph a, Code
1 18 2007, is amended to read as follows:
1 19 a. Grants shall be paid in increments of two thousand five
1 20 hundred dollars, up to a maximum of ten thousand dollars upon
1 21 proof that the veteran has been evacuated from the operational
1 22 theater in which the veteran was injured to a military
1 23 hospital for an injury received in the line of duty and shall
1 24 continue to be paid, at thirty=day intervals, up to the
1 25 maximum amount, so long as the veteran is hospitalized or
1 26 receiving medical care or rehabilitation services authorized
1 27 by the military and the presence or assistance of family
1 28 members is necessary.
